How the index is built

Four components, weighted equally

Each rail scores on a 1–100 scale. The index is their geometric mean.

Methodology summary

The MEI is an equal-weighted geometric mean across four components (three rails plus realized demand). Each component is normalized from its constituent metrics on a 1–100 scale. See the Methodology for the full derivation.

On being opinionated

The MEI is transparently opinionated — like every major reference index, its metric selection, normalization bounds, and aggregation rules are deliberate editorial choices, published in full and versioned when changed. Credibility comes from consistency and transparency, not from pretending to be above judgment.
